We think Starter Shares can be the ideal building blocks to form the foundation of a portfolio for both new and experienced investors.

We encourage investors to have at least three of these companies on the way to a portfolio of 15 shares or more.

Starter Shares is a business that epitomizes the investment philosophy here Share Advisor. They contain qualities that are desirable for long-term investment. So, we’re looking for some (or all) of the following:

  • impressive track record;
  • dominant market position;
  • business that is easy to understand and easy to do;
  • strong management team;
  • excellent company culture; and
  • less volatility (hopefully) than the broader market.

This is a company that we believe in for the long term, and where we think that its management, business practices and financial characteristics can make it a good bet for many years to come.

Share Advisor “Stock Starter” Pick #2:

Britvic (LSE:BVIC)

England (LSE: BVIC) is the UK’s second largest soft drink maker, thanks to its relationship with PepsiCo. As well as Britvic, brands include Fruit Shoot, J2O, Robinson and Tango.

The combination of predictable dividends in a low-yielding world and the potential for acquisition activity has made the consumer staples sector more expensive than usual. But there are still pockets of value and we believe Britvic is one of those opportunities, and its growth opportunities are as good or better than competitors earning higher multiples. Britvic is able to expand at home with new product launches and is also busy expanding international distribution.

Britvic is also improving efficiency, which should improve distribution with lower costs per unit and more flexibility to expand in the future. Financial report watchers should see this translate into higher operating margins over the next few years, which is an area where management has made consistent improvements.
