After taking a 2-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game at the Harry Gwala Stadium, at some point, it looked like Chiefs would easily win the game.
Maritzburg, however, put up a good fight and found two goals to go to half level on the scoreboard.
But the Chiefs managed to find a third goal and got three points which put them in fourth place.
They have 37 points, the same as Orlando Pirates on goal difference.
SuperSport United are second with 39 after losing to Pirates on Saturday night.
Head coach, Arthur Zwane was thankful for the result in a tough game.
“We scored two early goals from a good move. But after scoring the second goal, I thought the game was going to be easy.
“I remember telling them that these people would fight so hard because they were in a position where they wanted to survive.
“And we knew that at some point it was going to be either to decide the game or to score the third goal,” Zwane said after the game.
The commander is almost a good bottle of lead
“After seven minutes, for the dead ball situation (they were equalised) – and I have told them that they have a good set piece taker who can do a good delivery.
“So, from the throw-in, he’s dangerous because he’s physical and he’ll be fighting for everything to get a result today.
“It’s not going to be about good football today, it’s about making sure they get points from their team.
“We let them control the game and apply pressure,” added Zwane.

“Because when we controlled the game we looked like we could score at any moment…
“I told him at half-time that we had to repeat the game in the second half because they were coming.
“Or if they decide to sit, it will allow us to control it and if they come, they will be open at the back.
“They were more cautious and allowed us to get that momentum and you could see that we were able to score.”
The Chiefs were eventually awarded a penalty – which seemed controversial – and converted to win.
