You will be dealt with if you disturb the peace on campus – UG authorities warn all students
Authorities at the University of Ghana, Legon have warned students who try to disturb the peace on campus to desist from such acts as they will be dealt with in accordance with the laws and regulations of the University.
The authorities said students should be aware of the channels available by the University to seek compensation.
“The University will not condone violent behavior,” a press statement issued by the Registrar, Emelia Agyei-Mensah, said.
It comes a few days after some students, mostly from the Commonwealth Hall of Residence, clashed with the police over a High Court order served on the University.
The order is an injunction, stopping the University from enforcing the Board’s decision on the new residency policy.
But the statement on Thursday, February 16, no policy of October 26, 2022 was implemented when the message was submitted.
“The University has and continues to maintain, inside and outside the court, that it implements the decision of the University Council, which was notified by notification on December 14, 2022.”
He said it is within the authority of the Board to formulate the regulations and that faculty members and students are properly represented.
The statement said that by the time the University received the ex parte order, about 90 per cent of the affected students in the Commonwealth hall and Mensah Sarbah had accepted residence and paid.
“It’s hard to understand though ex parte so that, as it relates to the non-existent decision, after receiving the order, the University immediately stopped allocating rooms in the Commonwealth Hall out of an abundance of caution.
But in reply to the second order, in which some students walked out on Tuesday, February 14, the University said that “the order of the High Court may not be implemented”.
“In any case, orders must not be enforced in a violent and illegal manner in the actions of the group,” he said of last Tuesday’s clashes.
Calm has been restored but 18 people were arrested and arraigned in the Accra Circuit Court.
“Students are again reminded that the University Statutes and Student Regulations provide channels for seeking redress, and that the University will not consider abusive behavior.
“Any student who attempts to disturb the peace on Campus will be dealt with according to the laws and regulations of the University,” the statement concluded.
