Mrs. Sophia Silvey, Partner Success Manager for Yango Ghana, told reporters in an interview that this gesture is to appreciate and respect the female drivers cherished in the app for their dedication and hard work.
On this year’s International Women’s Day event with the theme “Embrace Equity”, she added that the session was also to highlight the company’s commitment to gender equality and an inclusive work culture.
She further recounted her personal experience as a woman working with Yango, whom she described as wonderful and inspiring.
“I joined Yango from a male-dominated industry where it’s hard to find women taking decisions and that’s why I’m happy to see women in leadership positions here. We have country managers in Zambia and Senegal who are women.
It is inspiring to know that Yango embraces equity and is a brand open to inclusivity and women’s empowerment,” she said.
Ms. Victoria Addison, a participant also shared how she entered the ride-hailing scene as a driver.
“I became a driver after convincing a man who had a fleet of cars and needed a driver to give me a car for work and pay. At first he was hesitant because I was a woman but then he agreed. Out of five cars with the same arrangement, I was one of three people who can make car payments on time,” he said.
According to him, the decision to drive with Yango is worthwhile because he now has a reliable source of income and livelihood.
He added: “It’s been a great experience working as a Yango partner driver and I’m happy. I now have a reliable source of livelihood and the bonus is great.
Broadcast journalist and influencer, Anita Akuffo, encourages female drivers on the Yango app to achieve greatness in their chosen profession.
“You get better and better because you help people on their journey. I encourage you to take each day, be the best and enjoy everything you do,” he advises.
