World Cup 2026: Jonas Adjetey reveals mental strain of Black Stars expectations
Black Stars defender Jonas Adjetey has acknowledged the weight of expectation that comes with representing Ghana, admitting that players are under constant pressure whenever they step onto the pitch in national colours.
The 22-year-old VfL Wolfsburg centre-back, who has emerged as one of Ghana’s standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, said the demands of supporters never ease, regardless of the occasion or opposition.
Speaking on Beyond the Whistle, Adjetey explained that the intensity surrounding the national team means every match is treated like a must-win encounter by fans across the country.
“There is a little bit of pressure, yes, but how you deal with it is the main thing,” he said.
“Everyone wants the Black Stars to succeed in every game. There is nothing like a friendly match because people always want to see results.”
Adjetey has played a key role in Ghana’s run to the Round of 32, delivering composed and disciplined defensive displays across three Group L matches, where he helped the team secure two clean sheets.
He stressed that managing expectations is part of the job for every international player, especially in a football-loving nation where emotions run high after every result.
