World Cup 2026: Jerome Opoku acknowledges England threat

Ghana defender Jerome Opoku has acknowledged the quality of England’s squad ahead of their crucial Group L clash on June 23 but insists the Black Stars have their own strengths to rely on.

“Obviously we know that they’ve got good players. They’ve got great quality,” Opoku said.

“But I think as a group, we know our qualities too. So this is another game for us, and we need to give our full fight like we did against Panama. Die for each other on the pitch.”

The centre-back, who impressed alongside Jonas Adjetey in Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama, is under no illusions about the challenge posed by the Three Lions. England opened their World Cup campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia, with Harry Kane scoring twice to equal Gary Lineker’s record of 10 World Cup goals.

Opoku also reflected on the emotional high of Ghana’s dramatic stoppage-time winner against Panama, with Caleb Yirenkyi’s debut goal securing three vital points.

“When the goal went in, emotions were high. You saw the reactions from the fans, the bench, and even myself. It was amazing. Perfect three points, and that’s set the tone for the games coming.”

The defender dismissed suggestions that a draw would be a good result against England.

“We won the first game, and I’ve seen a lot of people saying, ‘Now all we need is a draw.’ For me, the most important thing is you go into every game looking for the three points. Whatever comes comes, but you can’t approach a game looking for a draw.”

Ghana face England on June 23 in Boston before wrapping up the group stage against Croatia on June 27. For Opoku and his teammates, the message is clear: respect the opponent, but fear no one.
