World Cup 2026: ‘I’m very happy for the guys’ â?? Hugo Broos overjoyed as South Africa make history
South Africa head coach Hugo Broos expressed immense pride and joy after his side secured a historic 1-0 victory over South Korea to reach the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history.
Thapelo Maseko’s goal proved to be the golden ticket, sending Bafana Bafana through to the Round of 32, where they will face Canada on Sunday, June 28.
Speaking to Fox Sports after the match, the Belgian tactician struggled to contain his emotions as he reflected on the achievement.
“It’s very difficult to explain how it feels. It’s a fantastic experience. It was so tough today, but we played a very good game; we had chances, and technically, I think we played very good,” Broos said.
He praised his team’s defensive discipline and transition play, which frustrated South Korea throughout the contest. “It was very difficult for South Korea to find the spaces, we defend good and in transition, we were dangerous, and that’s what we wanted to do.”
Broos, who has overseen South Africa’s rebuilding process, dedicated the historic achievement to his players.
“We are in the second round, this is historicalâ¦I’m very happy for the guys â players,” he added.
The result marks a significant milestone for South African football, with the team having failed to progress beyond the group stage in their three previous World Cup appearances in 1998, 2002, and 2010.
Bafana Bafana will now prepare for their Round of 32 clash against Canada, with the opportunity to extend their historic run even further.
