World Cup 2026: Ghana matches historic African defensive record in England draw

The Black Stars of Ghana joined an exclusive African World Cup record after keeping clean sheets in their opening two matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The two clean sheets saw Ghana become only the fifth African team in tournament history to achieve the feat.

The Black Stars began their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama before holding England to a goalless draw in the second round on Tuesday.

Only a handful of African nations have managed to complete their first two World Cup matches without allowing a goal. Cameroon were the first to achieve the milestone during the 1982 edition before Morocco repeated the feat in 1986.

Nigeria later joined the list at the 2014 World Cup, while Morocco became the first African nation to accomplish it twice after another strong defensive start in the 2022 tournament.

Ghana have now added their name to that historic sequence in the 2026 edition.

Despite their defensive solidity, Ghana’s attacking struggles have continued to attract attention throughout the tournament. The Black Stars are currently the only team at the 2026 World Cup yet to register a single shot during the first half of any match they have played.

The numbers also place Ghana alongside another unwanted World Cup record. According to Opta, they have become only the second team in tournament history to complete two consecutive first halves without recording a single attempt on goal, matching the mark set by Costa Rica during the 1990 World Cup.

While questions remain about their attacking output, Ghana’s defensive organisation has so far kept their World Cup hopes alive heading into the decisive final round of the group stage.

The Black Stars will return to action on Saturday in a final Group L encounter against Croatia.
