World Cup 2026: Getting to know Colombia â?? Ghanaâ??s Round of 32 opponent
The Black Stars of Ghana will look to overcome Colombia in their Round of 32 to continue their journey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Their opponent, Colombia, will head into the showdown carrying a proud World Cup history and a squad filled with attacking quality.
Known as “La Tricolor,” the South American side has grown into one of the continent’s most respected football nations, earning admiration for their passionate supporters, technical football and memorable generations of talent over the years.
Colombia’s World Cup Story
Colombia made their FIFA World Cup debut in 1962 during the tournament in Chile. Although they exited at the group stage, they made history with a dramatic 4-4 draw against the Soviet Union, a match remembered for producing the only Olimpico goal ever scored at a World Cup.
The nation returned to the global stage in 1990 after a 28-year absence. Guided by Francisco Maturana, the team featured iconic names such as Carlos “El Pibe” Valderrama, Faustino Asprilla, Freddy Rincón and goalkeeper René Higuita. Colombia reached the Round of 16 before suffering an extra-time defeat to Cameroon.
The Rise and Pain of the Golden Generation
Expectations were enormous heading into the 1994 World Cup in the United States following Colombia’s famous 5-0 qualifying victory over Argentina in Buenos Aires. However, the tournament ended in disappointment as the team failed to progress beyond the group stage.
The aftermath became one of the darkest chapters in football history when defender Andrés Escobar was tragically murdered shortly after returning home, a devastating event that deeply affected Colombian football for years.
Colombia qualified again for the 1998 World Cup in France but once more exited during the group stage. The team then entered a difficult transitional period and missed the following three editions of the tournament.
Brazil 2014: Colombia’s Greatest World Cup Run
Colombia’s finest World Cup campaign came in 2014 under Argentine manager José Pékerman. The South Americans swept through Group C with victories over Greece, Côte d’Ivoire and Japan before defeating Uruguay 2-0 in the Round of 16.
Their impressive journey eventually ended with a narrow 2-1 defeat to hosts Brazil in the quarter-finals, but the tournament marked Colombia’s best-ever finish at a World Cup.
James RodrÃguez emerged as the star of the competition after scoring six goals to claim the prestigious Golden Boot award.
Colombia’s Return to the Knockout Stage
At the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Colombia once again impressed by topping their group. Their campaign, however, came to a painful end after a dramatic penalty shootout defeat against England in the Round of 16.
Luis Diaz and James Rodriguez Lead Colombia’s 2026 Squad
Colombia’s current squad is led by Bayern Munich star Luis Diaz and experienced captain James Rodriguez, who remains Colombia’s all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history.
Head coach Nestor Lorenzo has built a squad with strong attacking depth, notably selecting nine midfielders to provide creativity and flexibility going forward.
As Ghana prepare for their knockout showdown against Colombia, the Black Stars will be facing a nation with rich World Cup experience, attacking firepower and ambitions of recreating the magic of their historic 2014 campaign.
The high-stakes Round of 32 showdown is scheduled for Saturday, July 4, and will kick off at 01:30 am.
