World Cup 2026: â??Itâ??s getting tiringâ?? â?? Jordan Ayew replies ‘ball-hogging’ critics ahead of Colombia showdown
Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has dismissed growing criticism of his performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting he remains focused on carrying out Carlos Queiroz’s tactical instructions rather than responding to public opinion.
The Ghana skipper has come under increasing scrutiny during the tournament, with some supporters questioning his sharpness, movement, decision-making in possession and defensive work rate.
Calls for the veteran forward to be dropped have also gathered momentum on social media after the group stage.
However, speaking to Ghanaian journalist Gary Al-Smith, Ayew made it clear that the criticism does not distract him, stressing that his role on the pitch is defined by the coach’s game plan.
When I asked Jordan Ayew about people (including me) saying his contribution in certain games have not been great, he doesnt release the ball etc, he laughed and said: “It’s getting tiring, isn’t it?”

Ayew’s response comes as Ghana prepare for a high-stakes Round of 32 clash against Colombia after finishing the group stage with four points from three matches.
Colombia arrive in confident mood after victories over DR Congo and Uzbekistan before holding Portugal to a goalless draw. The winners will face either Switzerland or Algeria in the Round of 16 on July 7.
