MANILA, Philippines—After Chery Tiggo failed to reach the All-Filipino Conference semifinals of the Premier Volleyball League, Mylene Paat shifted her focus to the Philippine women’s volleyball team.
Although the National Volleyball Federation of the Philippines has not announced the line-up for the 32nd Asian Games, the PVL Reinforced Conference MVP expressed his commitment to represent the country in Cambodia in May.
“Now, I will prioritize the national team. Whatever it takes, I will play for the national team,” Paat said after Chery Tiggo’s All-Filipino campaign ended with a 21-25, 26-28, 21-25 loss to Petro Gazz on Tuesday in Iloilo.
If Paat makes it to the finals, he will play in the SEA Games for the third time in a row, after finishing fourth last year in Vietnam and at the 2019 Manila Games.
The Philippine women’s volleyball team, under Brazilian coach Jorge Souza de Brito, has rased for its first podium finish since the 2005 biennial meet, when the squad won bronze.
Chery Tiggo once again lost steam in the latter part of the tournament as in Reinforced, where they reached the semifinals but lost all their games.
The All-Filipino Crossovers started strong, winning the first three assignments but they dropped four of the last five games to bow out of contention.
Paat, who was the top scorer in the preliminary rounds with a total of 148 points, put a premium on his team’s mental strength.
“I think each of us must strengthen our mental strength. We must treat every game as a championship game. That’s the right mentality,” he said in Filipino. “The skills are there. We can polish our moves as a team but mental toughness is a long process.
Despite not being in the semi-finals for the All-Filipino Conference for the second time, Paat is still proud of the team.
“We really want to win and it hurts because we didn’t give everything. But I’m still proud of them,” said Paat.
