With Official Starter, our marketplace is fun and inviting
Meet Raja and his entourage of market women smiling at shoppers and social media at the Day Show with Berla Mundi.
Ernest Raja Nettey, known as the Official Starter on social media, is a Ghanaian Youtuber and choreographer who is famous for his videos of dancing with market traders.
Raja told Berla Mundi how he was inspired by his late mother to join the market women to share happiness on our screens. For Raja, growing up in the local community of Cowlane, a suburb of Accra, deepened his relationship with the dancers.
“My mother is a trader. Whenever we go to his shop, we see different people working to get food. So communicating with her (market lady) is easy.
Before dancing with our market mothers, Raja started his street choreography with a smile on the face of the disabled.
Another face of Raja’s movement is to distribute money and help the needy. Talking about this side of his work, he shared how he relies on the kindness of others to help the underprivileged in the video.
“I didn’t ask, but an anonymous person supported me. They kept me going,” Raja told Berla Mundi.
For King, one of the main challenges is the lack of funds to support his philanthropic work. He noted that he would love to do more for the dancers and the poor but could not finance this project alone. Raja hopes to raise funds to tour other local markets in Africa.
