The start of a winter storm with wet snow and rain caused hundreds of school closures, flight cancellations and several power outages in parts of the Northeast on Tuesday.
The storm track includes parts of New England, northern New York, northern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey. Snow totals on Wednesday are expected to be between 10 and 60 centimeters, depending on the area.
“This is a unique winter storm for our small state. There will be big differences in the amount of snowfall depending on where you are,” said Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, who ordered all executive branch state office buildings closed. “Some cities may receive significant amounts of snowfall, while others may receive a fraction of that amount or even just rain.”
The storm will also affect parts of Quebec and Atlantic Canada, with snowfall warnings and special weather statements posted by Environment Canada.
Flight cancellation
The airport in Albany, NY, which began clearing snow on Monday night, was open, but canceled departures at 16 a.m. early Tuesday. Bradley International Airport in Connecticut is also open and clearing snow; about 15 percent of those flights were canceled.
The National Weather Service said that in New York five centimeters of snow per hour or more is falling at higher elevations, in the eastern Catskills through the middle-Hudson Valley, the middle of the Taconics and the Berkshires.
Wet, heavy snow snapped tree branches and downed power lines in the New York metropolitan area. More than 30,000 homes and businesses in the Albany area are without power.
Snowfall will be the highest of the season, said meteorologist Andrew Orrison of the weather service office in College Park, Md.
“It has been below average for snow in the northeast this year, and this nor’easter will have a great impact,” he said.
The rain turned to snow in parts of New England and the wind picked up. At least 80,000 customers are without power in New England. In New Hampshire, it was election day for city officials, but more than 70 communities postponed voting because of the storm.

“We know that driving conditions are going to be treacherous,” said Patrick Moody of AAA New England.
The weather service said the expected total snow from the storm, which is expected to wind up Wednesday, range from running to 30 to 46 centimeters at a higher elevation in Massachusetts, to 10 to 15 centimeters. in Boston. Higher elevations in southwestern New Hampshire could get 60 centimeters of snow, and Augusta, Maine, could see 20 to 30 centimeters.
