Windsor – the next LD by-election success? Maybe. Maybe not – politicalbetting.com

There has been much speculation this evening about the future of the Windsor MP who this morning was declared bankrupt over a £1.7m debt owed to the Inland Revenue.

Bankruptcy itself does not cause a member of parliament to resign. According to the rules, a member of parliament who has been declared bankrupt must step aside if there is a bankruptcy ban. This can happen if the bankrupt refuses to cooperate with the process. There is no suggestion that this is the case but it could be.

Looking at the Tories’ record of defending seats against the Lib Dems during the current Parliament, the chances of them holding Windsor look slim. Ed Davey’s party started in second place so there was no doubt as to who would be the challenger.

What makes the seat attractive from a Lib Dem point of view is that it is close to a real center of strength for the party where there are hundreds of activists who do not have to travel far to campaign. LD holds the nearby seats of Richmond Park, Kingston and Twickenham and dominates local councils.

Because of this, the Tories will do everything in their power to ensure that there is no election. The last thing Sunak needed was an electoral defeat.
