This is the biggest day of industrial action we have seen in the NHS since its foundation almost 70 years ago.
The problem is that, like other public areas where we work, unions don’t want to accept pay rises that don’t keep pace with inflation. They argue that if they do otherwise, they will receive a salary cut.
Sunak has been very adamant about his resolution to fight the claim. The big problem for him and the Tories, is that this is not supported by the polls. They don’t have a public opinion about him and in the end they can be decisive.
So far, it is hard to see either side changing their position which could mean a lot of disruption to vital public services like the NHS.
On a personal level I was booked for surgery on my spine at an NHS hospital last Friday and I am absolutely petrified that this will get me back to the strike period. Fortunately for me that has happened but I can screw up the follow-up appointment.
Does Sunak fully appreciate the challenge he has created for himself. He is a conscious politician with little experience as he only became an MP in 2015.
