In all the discussion about next year’s London Mayoral election almost no one has noticed that any difference is due to the changes Johnson made to the mayoral election system when he was PM.
The old system effectively gave voters two choices with the second choice going into effect if the first choice didn’t make the top two in the first count. Now thanks to Johnson’s change all the mayoral elections and they will be decided by the first through the post.
Earlier in London, the LAB competitor was helped by a second preference vote. They are no more and as we saw in some of the mayoral elections this past May it gave a huge boost to Tory candidates. Johnson knew what he was doing.
In Bedford where I voted, last May saw the Tory elected for the first time just squeezing and went to the top of the polls with less than a third of the votes.
The big problem for those who oppose the Tories is that most of them have a choice of anti-Tory options that before the post helped the blue team.
