Why City signed former Pirates midfielder Makola

Mpho Makola’s arrival at Polokwane City will increase the club’s chances of securing automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership, so the club are rushing to sign him, an insider at the Limpopo-based club has said.

Makola signed with Polokwane City after being released by Cape Town City.

Polokwane are in the race for promotion to the top flight and the club is aiming to win the Motsepe Foundation Championship, rather than having to fight it out in the playoffs.

Limpopo club coach Duncan Lechesa is said to be the main reason for Makola’s arrival at the club and he believes his experience will add a lot of value to the club and inspire other players to dream big.

“(Bibo) has played in the top league for many years and his experience will play a major role in the club, so he believes. The team already has some top players who have played in the big teams, like Lucky Baloyi and Lerato Lamola, so having another experienced player will be good for the team,” said an insider.

“We are already one of the top three teams in the league racing for the title. It is important to have a balanced squad at this stage and make sure you have players who can handle the pressure. That is why Makola is in the team, he also believes in the squad.

“Coach Duncan believes in him and he knows that he will bring something good to the team. The mandate is very clear and Bibo also knows what he wants from him. He will not be treated differently, but like any other player in the team. The good thing is that he is a good and professional person who respects his career.

Makola, who is 36, has also played for Free State Stars, Orlando Pirates and has made several appearances for Bafana Bafana.
