In the new film – which premiered on January 20, at the Sundance Film Festival – Shields recalls struggling to find film roles after he graduated from Princeton University in 1987. He was excited to meet an old friend about a possible project, and he invited him back to his hotel room so he could call a cab.
“I just really froze,” said Blue Lagoon star said in the document over The stone is rolling. “One ‘no’ is enough. And I just thought, ‘Stay alive, and get out.’ And I just closed it. And Lord knows I know how to be separated from myself. I have practiced that.”
Shields continued: “I wanted to remove everything from my mind and body, and stay on the path I was on. And the system never came to help me, you know? So, I just had to be strong on my own.”
The film, directed by Lana Wilson (who is leading Taylor Swift‘s Miss America doc) shows Shields processing her feelings, from initially rejecting guards who say the incident was rape to finally writing a scathing letter to her attacker.
“I’ve come to a place, and we’ve come to a time in our society, where we can talk about this more openly,” Shields told THR. “I don’t know what I’m going to say. I thought, I’ve come to this place, and I feel as a mother of two young girls that I hope that just hearing my incident I can improve myself to be a lawyer. Because of this it happens every day, and it shouldn’t happen. I feel like I’ve come to a place where I can talk about it. It’s been a long time coming.”
The New York native shared her daughters Rowan, 19, and Grier, 16, with her husband Chris Henchy. She has been married to the producer since 2001.
