Alan Cummings don’t want to be an Officer of the Most Excellent Order in the British Empire!
If you don’t know, At Good wife alum was awarded the OBE in 2009 as part of Queen Elizabeth IIList of birthday honors for his work as an actor and LGBTQ+ rights activist. But 14 years later, Alan revealed “something I recently did for myself” to mark his 58th birthday – he returned the prestigious award! Why is that? He showed it Instagram Friday that he wanted to avoid the “poisoning” of the British Empire. Alongside two pictures of himself, including a portrait featuring him wearing an OBE medal, Alan said in the caption:
“Fourteen years ago, I was very grateful to receive the 2009 Queen’s birthday honors list, because it was awarded not only for my work as an actor but ‘for activism for equal rights for the gay and lesbian community, USA’. Back to the Defense Act Marriage guarantees that same-sex couples cannot marry or enjoy the same basic legal rights as straight people, and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell that gays, lesbians or bisexuals are openly prohibited from serving in the military. (With the exception of two the policy was implemented by the Clinton administration).

The Traitors The host then explained how the death of the queen in September brought to light “the conversation about the role of the monarchy and especially the way the British Empire profits at the expense (and death) of indigenous people around the world,” noting that the new knowledge “opened my eyes.” He continued:
“Also, thank you, times and laws in the US have changed, and the good appreciation that was brought to LGBTQ + because in 2009 is now less powerful than the misgivings I had with imperial poisoning. So I return my award, explaining my reasons and thank you very much for giving it to me in the first place.I am now back to being my old Alan Cumming again.
