Apartment buildings collapsed, debris littered the streets, families huddled in tents at a soccer stadium: Early images show widespread damage in Kahramanmaras, Turkey, a city of 400,000 that lay between the epicenters of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake which was devastating on Monday and an unusually powerful aftershock. which was struck hours later.

Using satellite imagery, The Times identified nearly 200 buildings in central Kahramanmaras, also known as Marash, that showed obvious signs of damage. Downtown districts with taller buildings were hit hard, while residential areas outside the city center did not appear to be damaged.

The devastation in Marash is just a slice of the rubble seen in southern Turkey and northern Syria. The earthquake was one of the strongest recorded in the region, roughly equal to the 1939 earthquake in Turkey that killed more than 30,000 people.
Entire blocks near the city center have been reduced to rubble. Cars lined the streets, with people – whose homes were damaged or who felt unsafe staying in damaged or vulnerable buildings – sleeping inside. The city’s football stadium has become an aid distribution point, where displaced families are living in tents. The nearby hospital that used to be surrounded by buildings has now stopped.

The Turkish president visited the survivors at the stadium on Wednesday. He acknowledged that rescue efforts had been slowed by blocked roads and airport infrastructure problems and said more help was needed.
For days, rescue teams and family members have been working through the rubble of collapsed buildings across the city. Many survivors were angry that it had taken so long for heavy machinery to arrive as they searched for loved ones trapped in the wreckage.

According to a report from the Turkish government, the province of Kahramanmaras, where the city of Marash is located, is among the most difficult areas. On Thursday, a three-month state of emergency was imposed on 10 of Turkey’s 81 provinces, including Kahramanmaras. The death toll in Turkey and Syria is expected to rise as rescue teams continue to search.
