Western North: FDA destroyed expired products worth GH¢124,271
The Food and Drug Authority (FDA) in the North West Region in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Friday February 17, 2023 destroyed unhealthy consumer products worth GH¢124,271.
Commodities including food, orthodox medicines and herbs were confiscated by the FDA from some retail shops in Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai and Sefwi Wiawso Municipalities.
The items were then transported to the landfill in Sefwi Wiawso and disposed of safely.
Talk to Citi News after the seizure and destruction of the product, the Western North Regional Head of the FDA, Albert Ankomah indicated that according to the Public Health Act 851 section 7, it is illegal to sell unwholesome products to consumers therefore it is necessary to monitor the market they do that. leading to seizures.
“When buying products in the market, we will ask you to check that the product’s label is in English and also the expiry date of the product and do not buy expired products,” Mr Ankomah warned the consuming public.
“Also, go ahead and check the FDA registration number on the product or visit the FDA website to confirm whether the product you are purchasing is registered or not,” he said.
The Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Environment Officer, Samuel Agyabeng Dankwah also advised traders to be cautious when traveling to Accra and Kumasi to buy goods to restock their shops.
