The case of a West Rand police officer who allegedly killed a bouncer and injured another at a pub has been put on hold on February 6.
The bouncer was reportedly trying to stop an altercation between the police and his ex-boyfriend when they were shot.
Independent Police Investigation Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Lizzy Suping said on Monday that an officer linked to the Saps Infrastructure Unit was detained in the Kagiso detention cell.
Investigation
“Ipid is investigating the death of a bouncer at a pub in Kagiso by a police officer on January 27 at about 11:55 p.m.
“It is alleged that a Sergeant from the West Rand Infrastructure Unit went to a local pub where he bumped into his ex-girlfriend and they had an altercation which led to assaulting her. The Bouncers in the pub intervened. The police then continued to fight the bouncers.”
Shootout
Suping said the police went out and allegedly came back with firearms and started firing randomly at the bouncer.
“One bouncer was taken to the hospital for medical treatment and died on arrival. One of the bouncers was also shot and he sustained a wound in his left knee. After being shot, the officer ran away and was later found hiding in a shack three houses away from his home.
A post mortem was also conducted on Monday.
Four bouncers were shot
In an unrelated incident last September, four bouncers were shot outside a nightclub in Greyville, in Durban, and taken to hospital.
According to Shawn Herbst, a spokesperson for the emergency service, Netcare 911, a group of bouncers were meeting outside the nightclub after 10pm.
Herbst said a vehicle of an unknown description drove up to the group, stopped in front of them, and opened fire.
It is not clear whether it was a high caliber round or not.
“Our team responded to the scene along with other private emergency services units. All four people were rushed to the hospital. Two were transported privately while the other was taken to the hospital by Netcare911. All four people are in critical condition,” Herbst said after the shooting.
