Several hundred Ghanaian medical students studying on Ghanaian Government scholarships in Cuba have been abandoned and their academic pursuits are threatened due to non-payment of monthly allowances.
The students claimed they were not paid for about eight months 3FM that they live in hell and feel neglected by the state.
“Now we are living in hell. Now we depend on our friends in other countries for money, but we cannot go back to the same friends for money. We feel neglected and the difficult situation we are in,” said the student spokesperson.
According to the students, the Ghanaian embassy has told them that they are working on it for the past eight months, but nothing has been done. The agreement with the Scholarship Secretariat is that at the end of each month students are given allowances. “Literally we will receive $250 a month” he refused to reveal.
The stranded students are more clear that they have adopted certain complicated ways to survive even at the expense of their academic activities. “I’m going out with a woman who comes from a good home and she’s the one who supports me. Some of us live in hiding and our academics are very affected,” one medical student told 3FM Sunrise.
However, the students who are training to become doctors are confident that the challenges ahead will not deter them from returning to Ghana.
