We are committed to join the aggrieved factions to ensure peace in Bawku – U/E Regional Minister
The Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has announced that it is committed to engaging the two conflicting factions in Bawku to bring lasting peace to the region.
The Security Council said it was also committed and would begin an investigation into the killing of civilians in Bawku by some military personnel.
The military was accused of shooting and killing seven civilians in Bawku on February 1, 2023, which the military hierarchy denied.
The allegations have caused tension among relatives of the deceased who have demanded an investigation into the matter.
After a crunch regional security meeting in Bolgatanga, the Chairman of the Upper East Regional Security Council who doubles as regional minister, Stephen Yakubu, said REGSEC will commission an investigation to unravel the truth behind the alleged killing.
The regional minister said that there are many factors involved in the reason for the Bawku conflict which is being carefully investigated, but will eventually investigate to resolve the situation and factors that led to the conflict.
“There is criminality, there is politics, and there are reasons why some people don’t want this conflict to end, but I want to ask all factions to give peace a chance because Bawku is almost dead, and that’s what I really want.”
Mr. Yakubu further informed that the Regional Security Council has made several initiatives to save Bawku from continuous and rampant attacks.
“We are doing more initiatives, and we will engage the people of Bawku area to engage the stakeholders to save Bawku.”
