President Akufo-Addo, while in Munich, Germany, urged the international community to send a clear message to the coup plotters that the coup has never been, and will not be, a lasting solution to Africa’s political, economic and security challenges.
According to President Akufo-Addo, “Statements condemning the coup only without appropriate action, will achieve little or nothing, as witnessed today. This issue requires collective agreement, effective deterrence, courageous action and, that equally important, adequate preventive measures.
Delivering the main speech at a side event organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, in Munich, Friday, February 17, 2024, the President said that “some still want. authoritarian, private rule, because he claims Africa is underdeveloped and democracy is complicated, and we need to solve it quickly.
Quoting from the 2019 Annual Coup Risk Report, he pointed out that Africa experienced more coups than any other continent, which, he said, was a “bad statistic”.
Identifying the case of Ghana, President Akufo-Addo noted that political instability characterized many of the early decades of the nation’s life as an independent nation, and that Ghana became famous for exemplifying every kind of political experiment.
“The one-party state of the First Republic was overthrown in our first military coup, and the Second and Third Republics, which practiced democratic governance, were also overthrown by coups. My father, the President of the 2nd Republic, was overthrown about fifty-one (51) years ago, on the 13 January 1972. The Kutu Acheampong coup ended his tenure,” he said.
The President continued, “the instability caused the collapse of the economy, and caused the exodus from the country of many citizens and professionals. We may not have recovered from the tendency to want to leave the country as an answer to a difficult situation.
However, he noted that during the thirty (30) years of our 4th Republic, Ghana has enjoyed political stability under a multi-party constitution, and the longest period of stable constitutional governance in our history so far.
The President told the gathering that separation of powers is now a real phenomenon in Ghanaian life, promoting responsible governance. Efficient public services are now within reach.
“We have, at this time, experienced, through the ballot box, the transfer of power from one ruling political party to another on three (3) occasions in a state of peace and stability, without threatening the foundations of the country. Ghanaians have realized in this era a deep attachment to the principles of democratic responsibility, respect for individual freedom, human rights and the rule of law. This also brings more systematic economic growth, and increases self-confidence,” he said.
