We must restrict the government from imposing more taxes – Ofosu-Dorte

Private law practitioner, David Ofosu-Dorte, is advocating for legislation that will limit the taxes imposed on citizens by the government.

Delivering a public lecture titled “The 1992 Constitution: The basic law for our prosperity or a well-crafted guide to our economic doom” Mr. Ofosu-Dorte said Ghana’s taxation system has increased pressure on overburdened tax payers which can hamper private business .

He said restricting the government from introducing more taxes would also prevent the government from spending and limit its appetite for borrowing.

“There must be a higher limit where the government cannot pay more taxes…otherwise they will continue to increase their expenditure and they will spend it. Also, we must limit the government’s ability to borrow,” said Mr Ofosu-Dorte who is also the Executive Chairman of AB & David Law.

He also suggested that the national ID cards should be converted into bank accounts to reduce the unbanked population in the country.

He said that one of the easiest ways to increase the tax net is to convert voter ID and Mobile Money accounts of people who do not have bank accounts into bank accounts to solve the problem.

“If we want to increase the banking population…we can turn the voter ID into a bank account with a zero account. This is possible because of what Mauritius has done. Instead of doing that, we have done something that is detrimental to us,” said Ofosu-Dorte at the University of Studi Law School Professionals in Accra (UPSA).

Mr. Ofosu-Dorte added “we should not use E-levy as a means to tax Momo. We should use momo as a basis to open bank accounts for everyone to have bank accounts so that GRA can easily track the amount you earn and follow you.
