We must do everything we can to preserve our democracy – Akufo-Addo
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has advised Ghanaians to live up to their national promise to defend Ghana’s democracy to ensure that every citizen regardless of religion, belief or belief, lives in a state of freedom and democracy.
In a special address to the country to commemorate 30 years of Ghana’s democracy, the president quoted from Winston Churchill’s famous dictum: “Democracy is the worst form of government – apart from all that has been tried,” to express its importance. democracy in Ghana’s socio-economic development.
The President said that the country has gone through several phases and forms of government until the adoption of the 1992 Constitution thirty years ago and all of them can prove the benefits they have had for the development of the nation.
“We have held free and fair elections, we have a constitutional regime without restrictions on executive power, we have the rule of law without the rule of law, and we have lived through several military dictatorships and realized that we need democracy. So, our determination to live in a state of freedom and democracy resulted in the approval of the 1992 Constitution by a large margin in a referendum with more than 3 million people voting to approve it.
He said the country’s thirty-year journey has made Ghana an example for many other countries on the African continent.
“Our country is considered a beacon of democracy and stability in Africa that respects the principles of democratic accountability, human rights, and the rule of law has allowed us to oversee eight elections in the Fourth Republic with five presidential transitions and three peaceful transfers. power through voting from one party to another party and we have the right to be proud of this record.
He then praised the Electoral Commission for its invaluable role in managing the elections which are generally the foundation of the country’s democracy.
“I recognize that the strength of any democracy is determined by the credibility of the electoral process and respecting the will of the people, and we cannot ignore the fact that the situation is unstable after the disputed elections in many parts of the region. [African] continent and therefore we must all continue to urge the Electoral Commission to ensure that all stakeholders in the electoral process do not have any questions about the legitimacy of the election.
He further advised Ghanaians not to lose sight of the fact that there are some autocratic elements among the population who want to disrupt the years of democracy and peace the country has enjoyed under the 1992 Constitution.
“We have come a long way, and we should not assume that everyone in Ghana has accepted democracy as their preferred mode of government. There are those who prefer to have authoritarian rule because they claim that our country is underdeveloped and that democracy is complicated and we need to solve it quickly.
