The police command in Lagos State, said it has started an investigation into the death of Miss Whitney Adeniran, a 12-year-old student of Chrisland School in Lagos.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Lagos State, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.
Hundeyin said the Pen Cinema police division in Agege is handling the initial investigation following the incident.
He said the Homicide Section of the State Central Investigation Agency, Panti, will take over the case on Monday for a thorough investigation.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of the School due to the death of the student.
The Commissioner for Education in Lagos, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, in a statement said the school was closed pending ongoing investigations.
“We also note the impact of this unfortunate event on Whitney’s family, friends and acquaintances and ask for calm as we assure you that no effort will be spared to investigate the incident,” he said.
NAN reports that Whitney Adeniran, a pupil of Chrisland School, Opebi in Ikeja branch, reportedly died during a sports event at the Agege Stadium on Thursday.
The parents of the deceased have accused the school of being rude for continuing to ask what happened to their daughter.
The family said the school did not provide emergency response at the event, so their daughter is accused of not providing first aid at the scene.
The girl’s mother emphatically said that the girl had no pre-existing heart disease even though the doctor called it a heart attack.
Earlier, the management of Chrisland School, in a statement about the incident, stated that Whitney had reported her health “not very buoyant” on January 20, contrary to the claims of her parents.
The school said it chose to take him to a health center, not a hospital, based on distance considerations.
Chrisland rejected insinuations that there was foul play in the death case when he said he slumped in public.
“Our immediate response was to take advantage of the distance by identifying the nearest medical facility to take him, where the doctor on duty provided him with oxygen and all assistance,” the school said.
