The South African Civil Aviation Authority said the crash happened around 9am.
The crash was reported by the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Center.
The scene was a hive of activity with multiple responders present including medical teams, rescue teams, the South African Police Service and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department.
The aircraft departed from Grand Central Airport in Gauteng on a training flight with the intention of returning at the same airport.
Aviation authorities said a preliminary report would be issued within 30 days.
