WA: Calm restored in Dondoli community

Calm has been restored in Dondoli community in Wa municipality in the Upper West region after some uproared youths killed a middle-aged man by the police.

Abubakar Shahban, the deceased was reported to have been killed by the police anti-robbery task force for suspected links to a robbery gang that has been operating in Wa and its environs.

But his family denied his involvement in the crime and gathered in front of the Upper West Regional Coordination Council on Friday, March 10, 2023, to demand justice for him.

The family’s spokesman, Mohammed Tamim, said, “There is an agitation for justice, we want justice, the person who was shot is not guilty, he is not a thief, the police sent a wrong report to the public. Today is a mass mourning and Monday is the last prayer”.

The Chief Executive of Wa Municipality, Tahiru Issahaku Moomin has said that he is not convinced by the explanation given by the anti-robbery unit of the Upper West Regional Police Command, hence calling for an external investigative body to be formed to investigate the murder.

Abubakar Shahban was said to have left home on March 8 at around 8:00pm to visit a friend but did not return until he was informed of his killing on March 9.

The family has maintained that they will stop at nothing to ensure that the deceased is acquitted of the charges brought against him by the police.
