Facing a crisis that will end its chances of making the Premier Volleyball All-Filipino Conference playoffs, Cignal got something from a player who was definitely identified in the team and can live another day.

Rachel Anne Daquis scored HD Spikers’ last two points on Thursday night and led Cignal to a 25-14, 25-11, 19-25, 17-25, 15-11 marathon against beloved Choco Mucho at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

HD Spikers improved to 2-4 and advanced with wins against PLDT High Speed Hitters on March 11 and Army Lady Troopers on March 16.

And they could not have gotten into position if not for the 35-year-old Daquis, who scattered 17 points from 14 attacks in a performance that resembles his dogged style since bursting into the limelight more than a decade ago.

Missing

“I missed this feeling (returning hard to win), because this is the true identity of Cignal,” Daquis who also recorded 10 digs, said in Filipino, minutes after winning the joust with Deanna Wong who wrapped the match up after two hours. and 11 minutes.

“We always have the mentality of never giving up, being patient and believing in each other,” he continued. “We always pull each other, and play for each other – from the coach to the players. And we got the results we wanted.

Choco Mucho bounced back from losing the first two sets and looked ready to push further in the fifth, only to run into a stumbling block with Ces Molina actually spearheading Cignal’s attack.

Daquis then pushed the HD Spikers to match points with a brilliant down-the-line hit, before sealing his heroics past Wong.

Cignal ended a two-game skid and gave hope to a bleak semifinal possibility.

“We know it will be a tough battle for us, because Choco Mucho is a strong team,” said coach Shaq delos Santos. “We know they can fight back even when they’re down.

“Good, our team moves well and survives with attitude on the field. I am happy and proud of this team.”

Absent stars

Molina also finished with 17 points and 16 receptions, while Rose Doria scored four of her 15 points in the fifth while finishing with eight kills, four aces and three blocks.

Setter Gel Cayuna defeated HD Spikers with 18 good sets above four points, as Chai Troncoso and Ria Meneses added 15 and 10 points respectively.

Choco Mucho fell to a 2-3 record, missing star libero Denden Lazaro-Revilla, who was in uniform but sat out because he was feeling under the weather.

Kat Tolentino led the Flying Titans with 17 points as did Isa Molde, who also had 11 receptions and nine digs.
