Vilakazi wants Arrows team to be psychologically sharper

Vusumuzi ‘Kanu’ Vilakazi describes coaching at the Golden Arrows as a short blanket that requires special care to sleep successfully.

He said if you try to cover your head, your toes come out. Vilakazi said this after his team dominated but lost to Maritzburg United on Saturday afternoon.

New Maritzburg signing Jose Ali Meza scored the winner at Princess Magogo Stadium in the closing stages of the game.

The win took Maritzburg out of the relegation zone. They are now five points ahead of the 16th DStv Premiershipwhere the Marumo Gallants sit.

“We were able to win the game. I think the only thing we need to do is the psychological aspect of the players,” said Vilakazi after the game.

“We seemed to lose concentration at the end of the game. It’s something for us to improve and make sure we stay focused from the beginning to the end of the game.

“We played well, dominated the game and created many chances. And that’s why the goalkeeper was named Man-of-the-Match,” added the Arrows mentor.

Vilakazi believes his team needs to be balanced and able to defend while also capitalizing on opportunities up front.

Streets missed the chance

“I saw about seven chances that we could have converted into goals. That’s another aspect that we need to improve.

“I know football is a short blanket, you try to work in defense and then the attack lags behind.

“Now we have to score goals but also be able to defend. Have the right defensive structure to disrupt the opposition to score.

“But we play a team that plays on our turnovers. The goal is from our offense, they get turnovers and produce goals.

“There were one of two incidents in the first half that looked dangerous, but we also had to score,” Vilakazi said.

The result pushed Arrows into the relegation zone. They are currently in 13th place with four points separating them from bottom position.

Arrows will however get a chance to go far when they host the hapless Gallants at Putri Magogo on Saturday.
