Update! Boat sailors arrested after accident in Volta Lake
Sailor Gabriel Ajigodi, who was at the helm on Friday morning when the boat crashed in the Volta Lake, is in the grip of the police, 3news.com can confirm.
He is currently being held at Ada Foah Police Station, where he is being interrogated over the deadly cruise.
Five people were confirmed dead while several others went missing after a boat, carrying mourners from Azizanya to Azizakope, capsized in Lake Volta.
Member of the regional assembly Daniel Adzakpa told TV3 after disaster struck that the boat was overloaded.
The boat, which was supposed to carry 25 passengers, had more than 60 passengers.
According to some survivors, he signaled to Gabriel Ajigodi that it was too much and asked him to return to his place.
Twenty-year-old Mary Donuki told TV3‘s Joseph Armstrong was that when they realized that they opened too much they asked to return to Azizanya.
The sailor ignored the request and said that he would bring it to Azizakpe safely.
The disaster happened in the middle of the trip.
Mary Donuki lost her baby only one and a half years old.
There are still search parties in the area trying to find some survivors.
