Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes his side’s Europa League last 32 tie against Barcelona is a worthy final.
United are enjoying a renaissance under the Dutch boss, who took charge earlier this season.
They now travel to Spain for Thursday’s first leg match against La Liga leaders Barcelona in third place in the Premier League, five points behind Arsenal, but having played two more games than the Gunners.
Barcelona and United have a rich European history, with eight European Cup and Champions League titles between them, in addition to other continental trophies.
“I think Barcelona and (us) also (would) prefer to play (this match) in the final,” Ten Hag told UEFA in comments published on Wednesday.
“We are looking forward (to it), it (requires) a lot of energy to finish that, and it will be a great game.
“I hope everyone is fit for Barcelona and for us. So we see the game (to be played) at the highest level.
He also paid tribute to his Barcelona counterpart Xavi, saying he has been a fan since he played.
“As a player, I admire (Xavi),” added Ten Hag. “Barcelona, the way (he) plays with them… he is an important part of the team, you can see that (with) the philosophy he now brings, (this) is Barcelona.
“I really like the team, the attacking way of playing. I think they are in the right direction. I think it will be a good challenge between Manchester United and Barcelona.
Lisandro Martinez and Marcel Sabitzer are on loan for the first leg, but Casemiro is available as the current ban only applies to domestic matches.
But Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay will miss the game through injury after missing training on Wednesday.
