UN Secretary-General António Guterres has announced the largest allocation of the Central Emergency Fund.
He spoke on the sidelines of the AU summit in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.
Guterres said $250m (£208m) would be used for what he described as “the world’s forgotten crises” including famine in Africa.
That may sound like a lot of money but earlier this month the UN said it needed $2.6bn just to help the people of Somalia who are suffering from the worst drought in four decades.
The food crisis is one of the main topics on the agenda of African leaders at the summit.
Others are free trade deals across the continent and many conflicts in Africa. It appears that none of these issues will be resolved anytime soon.
