MANILA, Philippines – University of the East narrowly missed out on a three-year hiatus when it defeated Adamson, 25-18, 25-22, 25-14, in the return of the UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Mall. from Asia Arena.
Kenneth Culabat and JM Andaya led the way for the Red Warriors with 14 points each as the latter displayed an outstanding floor with 16 receptions and seven digs.
UE last defeated University of the Philippines in five sets during the second game of Season 82 on March 7, 2020, at the same venue.
“We have to set the tone for this season. This first win, although difficult, will be a morale booster,” UE assistant coach Jumbo Dimaculangan said in Filipino while calling head coach Jerome Guhit, who is in Taiwan with the men’s national team.
“It was a surprise to beat Adamson [in straight sets] know they are Final Four contenders. But the good thing is that our team is well received, so our passing is a key element to run the game and make life easier for the attackers.
Lloyd Josafat, who just arrived on Friday from a Philippine volleyball pool training camp in Taiwan, came off the bench in the second set and finished with 10 points built on eight attacks, one block, and an ace.
“Being part of the national pool is a big help and increases confidence for me. So when I come back here, I bring the attitude of the national team so that we will all click,” said Josafat in Filipino.
Setter Ralph Imperial also shone with 20 excellent sets, as Giles Torres and John Paul Mangahis added 10 points each.
None of the Falcons scored in double figures with Evander Novillo, Jude Aguilar, Joshua Magalaman, and Francis Casas with eight points.
Adamson coach George Pascua’s return to UAAP men’s volleyball came undone as his team was dominated offensively, 36-54.
