UAAP: Pido Jarencio eager to bring back UST pride, glory

MANILA, Philippines—Pido Jarencio wants to recapture the glory of the University of Santo Tomas when he returns as head coach.

Jarencio has time to accomplish that goal after signing a three-year contract on Monday.

“The work we do is difficult, so it’s important that we start with a strong foundation for these kids,” Jarencio said.

Known for his mantra “Pride, Puso, Palaban”, Jarencio hopes to recapture the thunder of 17 years ago when he led the Growling Tigers to the UAAP Season 69 crown in 2006-his first year at the helm.

Jarencio, 58, called the shots as a Growling Tiger for eight years, leading the team to two more Finals appearances before being hired as the head coach of NorthPort in the PBA.

Now, Jarencio is back home.

Even so, Jarencion knows he has a lot to do to turn around UST’s fortunes.

The Growling Tigers went just 4-24 in the past two UAAP seasons, including 1-13 in Season 85.

“We have a lot to improve, but it’s important for the kids to believe in the system we have,” he said.

Incoming third-year forward Nic Cabanero will once again lead the charge for the Growling Tigers as they aim for honors and a run to the Final Four in UAAP Season 86 later this year.

Working alongside Jarencio is three-time NCAA champion coach Bonnie Tan, who will also serve as a team consultant.

Joining Jarencio’s staff are team managers Waiyip Chong and Eric Ang, and assistant coaches Japs Cuan, Juben Ledesma, Lester del Rosario, Jeric Fortuna, and Jaren Jarencio, strength and conditioning coach Reil Vinard Espino, physical therapists RC Cua and Jose Aveluni Vergara, and academic coach Ian Herrera.

“Puro Tomasino is with us, so I am confident that the team we have formed will fight until the end for UST,” said Jarencio.
