MANILA, Philippines–National University opened its season by defeating Ateneo 25-15, 25-20, 25-16, in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball opener on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Alyssa Solomon had 12 points with the same amount of blocks and Princess Robles added seven attacks for 11 points and seven impressive digs as the Lady Bulldogs posted a victory after sweeping the tournament in Season 84.
Michaela Belen had eight points on top of four blocks and four service aces for the defending champions, who have won their last 19 games since the 2020 season.
A dominant opening frame for the Lady Bulldogs really set the tone for the carnage.
Solomon and Belen joined Sheena Toring, Erin Pangilinan and Robles in a brutal mid-set attack as NU pulled away from a tight back-and-forth contest.
Protecting a precarious one-point advantage, the Lady Bulldogs suddenly took the lead with a 10-1 attack that tore Ateneo in two.
The Lady Bulldogs were hardly threatened in the next two sets.
Ateneo came within five in the second set in a maze of NU mistakes, but the champions quickly regrouped to put out the fire.
Pangilinan, Belen and Robles put together a quick 9-2 run in the final frame and Ateneo answered with a long and unexpected rally at match point only to be taken on a leg by Faith Nisperos’ service error.
Alexis Miner led the Blue Eagles with nine points and seven blocks, while Vanessa Gandler and Nisperos each had eight points.
