MANILA, Philippines – Kenneth Culabat posted a stellar 19 points and 19 receptions to return University of the East to winning ways after defeating University of the Philippines, 19-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22, in the UAAP Season. 85 men’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Culabat, a third-year spiker, lit the fire on the Red Warriors with a versatile game as they bounced back from a first-set loss before defeating the Fighting Maroons in one hour and 46 minutes.
“The UP crowd is our motivation. For me, I want to make a crowd. We were pressured in the first set, so our coach made adjustments and motivated us to bounce back in the second set,” Culabat said in Filipino. “We have to prove in this game that UE is also a competitive team.”
UE tied Far East University and Santo Tomas University with a score of 2-1.
Red Warriors coach, Jerome Guhit, praised the players of both sides of Culabat.
“Our outside hitters also need to know how to pass the ball to reduce the burden on our libero. At least if we have a stable spiker, who can pass, the distribution of the ball will be better and easier for us,” said Guhit in Filipino. “At least two outside spikers we can pass. Responsibilities are shared well.”
