UAAP: FEU posts fourth straight win, beats UE in men’s volleyball

MANILA, Philippines—Mark Calado continued to play well to lift Far Eastern University to its fourth straight win, defeating University of the East, 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, in UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball. The tournament was held at the Filoil EcoOil Center in San Juan City.

After a 27-point outburst in the past two games, Calado poured in 23 points built on 19 kills, three blocks, and an ace to keep the Tamaraws in second place with a 5-1 record.

However, FEU’s leading goalscorer remained unsatisfied, saying he failed to apply his training against a gritty UE side, which saw him limited to one hour and 54 minutes per game.

“We still have a lot of things to polish. That’s the way it is,” Calado said. We didn’t communicate well and there were deficiencies at the defensive end. Our opponents are also good.”

The Tamaraws tried to fight back from a 20-23 deficit in the third when Calado stopped the bleeding followed by Lloyd Josafat’s attack error to cut the deficit to one. Josafat put the Red Warriors on set point, 24-22 before JJ Javelona answered with a strike of his own, but UE setter Ralph Imperial closed the frame with a 1-2 game.

FEU coach Rei Diaz told his wards to use what they did in practice to get things going and come back in the fourth.

“It’s simple. I told the team to remember what they did in practice,” Diaz said. “The kids are still delivering even though the schedule is tough because it’s midterm week. They still do a great job.

Dryx Saavedra also shined for FEU with 13 points. Martin Bugaoan tallied 10 points including three blocks, while Herald Domingo and Jelord Talisayan added eight and seven, respectively, with the latter grabbing a cool 12 receptions.

UE dropped its third straight game, sliding to a 2-4 card, despite JM Andaya’s effort of 20 points on 15 attacks and five blocks.

Josafat registered 16 markers for the Red Warriors. Ken Culabat had 11 points and 15 receptions, while Giles Torres added 10.
