MANILA, Philippines – Mark Calado poured in 27 points as Far Eastern University beat La Salle, 25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21, for their third straight win in the UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at Philsports Arena.
Calado turned in another 27-point performance as she posted 23 kills, three blocks, and an ace with six digs to lead the Tamaraws to their third consecutive victory for second place with a 4-1 record.
But FEU coach Rei Diaz wanted more from Calado.
“[We want more] from him especially Mark Calado is the UAAP high school MVP,” Diaz said in Filipino. “But I’m happy to hear from him that he’s staying in our system. Great job.”
Calado, who also won the MVP in the PNVF Champions League in 2021, said he needs to improve his leadership.
“We need to improve our communication on the court because sometimes we are rattled. We need to compose ourselves,” said Calado in Filipino. “I also have to avoid wrinkles inside the court. I can’t show negativity to my teammates.
Martin Bugaoan was also instrumental with 12 points, all coming from the attack. Setter Benny Martinez made an impressive 22 sets, as Herald Domingo and Carl Cabatac added nine and seven points, respectively.
FEU lost steam in the third set and was pushed to the limit by La Salle in the fourth tied at 4-1. But Jomel Codilla provided a spark off the bench and scored all three points for a 22-20 lead before Noel Kampton ended the bleeding with a kill.
Bugaoan and JJ Javelona lifted the Tamaraws to match point, 24-21 before Calado made the game-winning block on JM Ronquillo.
La Salle saw its three-game winning streak snapped by FEU, making it a 3-2 record.
Ronquillo and Kampton led the Green Spikers with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Vince Maglinao had 12 points and 19 receptions, while Billie Anima added 10 points including three digs.
