MANILA, Philippines – National University warmed up for the much-awaited La Salle giants clash with an emphatic 25-21, 25-9, 25-18 victory over Far Eastern University in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball on Saturday.
Michaela Belen delivered 16 points on 14 rebounds as the Lady Bulldogs outlasted their opponents with a powerful array of attacks for their sixth win in seven games before wrapping up Wednesday’s first round against the La Salle Lady Spikers.
Alyssa Solomon was the center of attention with 14 points, including 10 attacks, while Princess Robles scored 12 points. .
“Against La Salle, it’s back to the drawing board. We will review those games and this is the starting point of our preparation,” said NU coach Karl Dimaculangan.
Ahead of the pack with an unbeaten record after five games, the Lady Spikers face another title contender on Saturday in the Adamson Lady Falcons.
“The kind of preparation we will do will depend on tomorrow’s (Sunday) game. We will see the adjustments made in the first half here,” Dimaculangan said.
The Lady Tamaraws kept it tantalizingly close in the first set before Belen’s energetic down-the-line smash followed by Solomon’s ferocious crosscourt attack broke the standoff at 19-all.
Jovelyn Fernandez saw her attack cross the finish line and Jazlyn Ellarina’s block secured the opening set for the Lady Bulldogs.
Robles teamed up with Belen and Solomon to beat the Lady Tamaraws as the Lady Bulldogs were barely threatened in a runaway second set in which Solomon closed by deflecting 15 spikes.
Belen fueled FEU’s relentless onslaught in another dominant third set with Robles dropping two consecutive crosscourt kills from the same spot, dashing the Lady Tamaraws’ hopes.
