MANILA, Philippines-De La Salle University won its second straight by defeating University of the Philippines, 25-14, 25-20, 25-14, on Wednesday night in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.

Angel Canino again delivered for the Lady Spikers, smashing his way to 11 attacks from 13 points in a brilliant offensive foray with Jolina Dela Cruz and Thea Gagate.

“I feel relieved. Finally, we didn’t start well because it was too tight. We talked about sticking to the system we usually do in practice and following the game plan,” La Salle interim coach Noel Ocullo said.

The Lady Spikers were unhappy with the way they performed against the UST Tigresses in their season opener and made mistakes after making short work of the Fighting Maroons.

After capturing the second set, La Salle couldn’t back down, quickly advancing, 9-2, in the deciding frame behind Canino and Dela Cruz.

A service ace by Ethan Arce and a block by Nina Ytang cut UP’s deficit to five points, but that proved to be the last stand as the Lady Spikers scored again, including some heroics from Amie Provido and Shevana Laput, to ice the win.

“We are more focused this time and can produce the best. We know that we have to improve not only in skill, but also as individuals,” said Canino when the Lady Spikers now join the undefeated NU Lady Bulldogs at the top.
