The U.S. Supreme Court said Thursday it has not yet determined who leaked the draft court opinion that struck down abortion rights, but the investigation is continuing.
Eight months after Politico published an explosive leak detailing Justice Samuel Alito’s draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, the court said that the investigation team “so far has not been able to identify the person responsible with a lot of evidence.”
Previously, there was no public opinion before the court was ready to announce. Chief Justice John Roberts ordered an investigation the next day into what he called a “gross breach of trust.”
Investigators”conducted 126 formal interviews of 97 employees, all of whom declined to express their opinions,” the court said.
The investigation concluded, however, that it was “impossible” that the court’s IT system was “improperly accessed” by someone – based on an examination of computers, networks, printers and available call and text logs.
“The risk of intentional and unintentional disclosure of sensitive Court information” has increased with the coronavirus pandemic and the shift to working from home, the report said. More people are working from home, “as well as gaps in the Court’s security policy, creating a very easy environment to remove sensitive information from the Court’s buildings and IT network,” the report said.
Investigators are continuing to review “other electronic data … and several other inquiries are pending,” the report said.
