US Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said on Sunday she wants Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to be impeached and his advisers investigated after media reports described lavish trips he had taken for decades, funded by Republican donors.
“It’s the responsibility of the House to conduct that investigation in the form of impeachment,” he told CNN in an interview. However, he acknowledged progress is unlikely because the House of Representatives has a majority of Republicans unwilling to act against conservative justices.
Ocasio-Cortez said a timeline of Thomas’ relationship with Republican donor and property magnate Harlan Crow revealed a conflict of interest that began after Thomas began serving on the Supreme Court in 1991.
ProPublica reported Thursday that Thomas received expensive trips from Crow for decades despite a federal law requiring disclosure of most gifts.
Thomas defended the trip, saying in a statement on Friday that he had been advised that he should not report any type of “personal hospitality”, and had always sought to comply with disclosure guidelines.
He said he would follow new rules brought in by the Judicial Conference responsible for financial disclosure requirements for all federal courts.
Crow told ProPublica that he “never sought to influence Justice Thomas on legal or political issues.”
