U.S. probing reports seat belts coming loose in some Tesla Model X cars

The US auto safety regulator said on Tuesday it was opening a probe into 50,000 Tesla Model X vehicles after receiving two complaints reporting front seat belt failures.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said its preliminary evaluation includes 2022-2023 model year vehicles for reports of failure of the front seat belts to stay connected to the seat belt anchor pretensioners while driving.

Both of the newer vehicles did not engage the anchors and there were no collisions with passengers wearing seat belts, the agency said.

Tesla, which has since dissolved its press office, did not respond to a request for comment.

In one of the complaints from Larkspur, California, the Tesla was moving at a speed of 16 to 24 km/h and the automatic braking system was activated when the driver’s door of a large truck parked on the side of the road opened accidentally.

“With sudden deceleration, my upper body jumped forward and the force of my weight caused the seat belt anchors in the lower seat to snap,” the complaint filed with NHTSA said.

After NHTSA opens its initial evaluation, it must decide whether to upgrade to an engineering analysis before it can request a recall.
