U.K. musical The Bodyguard halted after fans ejected for refusing to stop singing I Will Always Love You

A British performance of The Bodyguard The music ended in unrequited love for some audience members who did not refrain from singing along to the anthemic finale.

A show at the Palace Theater in Manchester came to a screeching halt on Friday when two unruly patrons were ejected for joining in the singing. I Will Always Love Youa soaring emotional ballad, written by Dolly Parton and made famous by Whitney Houston in an early 1990s film.

The musical doesn’t have to be a singalong. Ushers brought signs saying, “Please refrain from singing,” and announcements were made in advance that customers will have the opportunity to join together at the end, but not for those during the show, said Tash Kenyon, a member of the audience.

During the closing number, someone shouted, “Does that mean we can sing now?” said Kenyon. A deafening voice rang out from the balcony and competed with the vocals of Melody Thornton, a former member of the Pussycat Dolls.

Laughter turned to anger and confusion, Karl Bradley told the Manchester Evening News.

‘Get out, get out, get out’

“The stage then just went black again and that’s when it really started to kick off in the higher tiers. You can really hear screams and gasps sound,” said Bradley. “Everyone started standing and looking through. There were chants of ‘get out, get out, get out’ to get people to leave.”

As the lights came up, an unwanted backup singer was shooed from his seat by theater security and the audience began cheering.

But the music and the show are over.

A spokesman for the theater said the show was canceled because disruptive fans who refused to sit down had disrupted the performance.

Thornton posted a video on Instagram thanking fans who were respectful and apologizing to those who weren’t.

Greater Manchester Police said they spoke to the two men who were removed by security and will review the evidence before taking action.
