Tyson Fury’s trainer has admitted that, if he is to fight Oleksandr Usyk on April 29, he will have to “train extra hard” to be ready.
The latest round of negotiations for the undisputed heavyweight title fight has gone public, with both fighters taking verbal jabs at each other on social media.
But Usyk insisted he would agree to Fury’s terms if the contest could be set for Saturday April 29.
That date leaves Fury, the WBC heavyweight champion, limited time to do a full camp with trainer SugarHill Steward.
“If he agrees and what he wants, if he feels he can be ready for April 29 and fight Usyk, then he needs to train harder,” Steward said. Sky Sports News.
“Time is short but I believe Tyson has the ability and physical attributes to handle the situation.”
He is confident of Fury going forward against Usyk, the joint WBO, WBA and IBF titlist.
“The gameplan is definitely losing,” Steward said.
“It’s setting up, using certain punches, certain moves to make the opponent move into that knockout punch.
“A good jab makes a knockout.
“Every fight is an adjustment and watching what your opponent is doing and making adjustments,” he said.
He added with a smile: “It’s not just one gameplan ever. It’s seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13. We only do 12 rounds but you’ve got one extra in the bag always.
The undisputed heavyweight championship fight should be confirmed soon.
WBA President Gilberto Mendoza has said that the WBA must accept the Fury vs. Usyk contract signed on April 1 or will instruct Usyk to begin negotiations with mandatory heavyweight challenger Daniel Dubois in order to retain the title.
