Tyson Fury has confirmed his return to the ring is “imminent” as talks continue about an undisputed heavyweight title fight with Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury came to the Manchester AO Arena for Sky Sports Box Office Chris Eubank Jr vs Liam Smith card on Saturday night, his training partner Joseph Parker on the undercard.
The holder of the WBC title has been in negotiations for an undisputed chapter with Usyk, and offers an exclusive update.
Asked when he would return to the ring, Fury told Sky Sports: “Hopefully soon.
“I don’t know when, but it’s getting close.”
Bob Arum, CEO of Fury’s American promoter Top Rank, has revealed that the venue is the only remaining obstacle for the fight to be confirmed, with the Middle East leading the race.
Arum said Sky Sports News the king of the WBC and WBA, WBO and IBF champion Usyk has agreed to the showdown and expects the location to be completed next week.
The unspecified country in the Middle East is the most anticipated host of the contest due to the huge amount of money said for the boxer, but if it does not happen, Wembley Stadium will be on the table.
“I’m very optimistic the fight will happen,” Arum said Sky Sports News.
“Both fighters have agreed to do the fight, the question is the site and we are talking to the Middle East because it is expected to make the biggest purse in the history of boxing.
“And if they do, that’s where the fight will take place because money is money. If not, the two fighters will agree to do the fight this spring at Wembley … in the first four months of the year.
“Fighters want to do the best for themselves because a fighter’s career, no matter how big they are, is limited and they want to make as much money as possible.
“So the only problem is – where will the fight be held? I believe that next week will be determined and then we will have an official announcement of the date and site for the fight – but the fight is happening.”
Saudi Arabia has emerged as a venue for boxing greats in recent years, including Usyk’s points victory over Anthony Joshua in their rematch last August, although Arum will not be drawn to the country to host and add a “partner” to the talks.
If the promised purse doesn’t materialise, it could be a return to Wembley where Fury defended his WBC crown with a sixth-round stoppage of domestic rival Dillian Whyte last April in front of 95,000 people.
“To do 95,000 people at Wembley, which we did for the Dillian Whyte fight… said Arum.
“Now, if there is a unification match between Tyson and Usyk, it will be even more spectacular.”
