Tyrus Hill’s dunk over Jamie Malonzo gets perfect mark, but not enough for title

PASSI CITY – David Murrell may have won the PBA Slam Dunk contest, but few would say Tyrus Hill won the night.

Dunk Hill over Jamie Malonzo will probably be the fans in the City of Passi Arena here will remember even if the Blackwater rookie got to watch Murrell take the title and the P30,000 cash prize.

It took a lot of convincing before Malonzo agreed to stand in the no-cost zone and set the Blackwater rookie’s leap through the popular Barangay Ginebra cage.

“They were scared at first,” Hill said. “But I told him ‘I’ll just jump you. Don’t push off and be safe. I’ll just jump over you.

“So I had the momentum and just jumped. We were all just in shock. To get 50 was great,” added Hill.

Even a perfect score from the judges that included PBA legend Allan Caidic and former dunk participant Noli Locsin could prevent Murrell from taking the event.

Murrell scored a total of 92 after the last dunk which the windmill reversed, edging Hill by one point in the last round not thanks to the first attempt when he failed to put his hand on the edge.

“Dunk before the last one I messed up,” he cried. “I dropped my point, but I thought I had it. We both thought it was me. He beat me by one point, so that was it.

Hill has plenty of reasons to like Murrell, his teammate at Converge for the first two conferences of Season 47.

“That was a crazy dunk,” Murrell said in the middle of Hill’s interview.
